It has come to our attention recently that Paulo Lins e Silva will be speaking on another panel involving international family law, this time at a conference sponsored by the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA) in Bucharest, Romania on November 1. Mr. Lins e Silva is the Immediate Past President of this organization. The topic of his panel is “The Role of the Lawyer in International Family Law”. Below is the contact information for the Children’s Rights Commission at the UIA, Mr. Lins e Silva’s fellow panelists, and the UIA’s Executive Committee. Let them know how you feel about Lins e Silva’s presence on this panel.

Let’s also point out that the UIA has a specific commission called the Children’s Rights Commission and also claims on its website to “respond to requests for intervention for the purpose of ensuring the respect of human rights”. The UIA’s website ( also mentions a close collaborative effort with the United Nations in the area of human rights. What about Sean Goldman’s right to know his father?

    Dear Mrs…. (Mom25)

Thank you for contacting me regarding the case of David Goldman and his four-year-old son now living in Brazil.

I share your concern for Mr. Goldman’s son Sean. The United States Embassy in Brazil and the State Department in Washington have been working with their Brazilian counterparts to attempt to reunite the father and son.

I will continue to monitor the progress of the diplomatic and legal activities with this case.

Thank you again for contacting me.

    Sherrod Brown

    There’s always hope!!!

  14. says:

We need to do more. We need to call and email and write the Senators and Congress People in New Jersey especially. I read in a post that Senator Sherrod Brown is “monitoring” the situation. How long has this monitoring been going on. Why can’t there be anything else done other than monitoring. For goodness sakes, it has been five years. People on this board need tog et angry all over again. People need to get mad and email and call with vigor – even more!

We need to hit Lins e Silva where it hurts the most. Its obviously not family. It has to be the wallet. We need to get him and his connections broken. All the associations that he belongs to – we need to keep emailing and calling and hold them accountable for having such a scumbag in their association.

We also need to e-mail the judges and get to the bottom of why this man is never punished. We also need to find out why the media can’t report this. Seems like if the Lins e Silva’s felt like they weren’t doing anything wrong, than why not report it. What would be the big deal. It’s not because it would be hard for Sean because they don’t care either way. It has become about getting what they want, not about the poor boy. What kind of life is that?

We need to find a way to raise money for David to keep going back to Brazil. It is not cheap going back and forth. maybe we can do Ebay sales and give a percentage to David’s fund. On-line auctions? Does anyone else have any other ideas? This man has been back and forth to Brazil so many times that he must be broke. Next thing you know they will be using that against him.

Has anyone heard anything from any of the humanitarian emails that are posted? What about any media e-mails?

Maybe we could have a separate blog post just for responses that we get back from various people??? That way we know what is going on…

Come on guys! Lets do this!!! If anyone wants to let me know about any fundraising ideas or any other way we might be able to raise money for David’s case, please email me. I wouldn’t mind helping to organize something.

  15. MC says:

it’s been a week and we don’t know how things are going on. I suspect it may have an order from the court prohibiting the media to make this case public.

If this is the case we should try to organize some events in order to make it known form people in Brazil. The event in Ipanema beach has already happened?

    We could send e-mails to

in order to let them know what is going on about this case. I hope it can help.

    take care

    Marcelo Carvalho

  16. Mom25 says:

    I had an idea… I am struggling for time… but here’s the idea…

Perhaps we should make a list of US UNIVERSITIES that offer Portuguese Languages and/or JOURNALISM… normally colleges already have a list of students associated to these educational fields… each have their own news production (journalism production can be quite broad), each department and each student of these departments have contact lists…

Professors and College students can move mountains when it comes to SPREAD some ‘irritating’ news…. they will write about it, they will try to verify the sources, they will send emails, post news in facebook, myspace, orkut, Hi5 and so on… they will be all over it….

Another thing is to contact Brazilian colleges as well, to start with the University of Rio de Janeiro…

This link may lead you to phone numbers, not emails – but of all Professors/staff

    Just another food for thought..

Looking forward to hearing better (some) news regarding the Goldman’s visitation in Brazil!

  17. says:

    I agree with Sonya!

Time to get down to business… Let’s e-mail and write some key US media contacts and ask them to start covering this story.

(USA Today should have picked up David’s story by now. Let’s write Mr. Bill Handleman from Ashbury Park Press newspaper and respectfully urge him to have USA Today run this story. E-mail

So this is the start of a list… feel free to add to it.

Let’s start sending letters and e-mails today.

  18. Mom25 says:

By the way, the link of the UERJ (Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro) that I submitted above will direct you straight to their LAW SCHOOL (Direito)…

  19. Mom25 says:

Not sure what happened… the message I submitted this morning was posted but the one I submitted last night, written prior to the one above, wasn’t… and I am not sure why….

  20. Mom25 says:

I tried again and it didn’t work, maybe because I am sending some links in that message, not sure… so this is to the ADM: there are 2 similar messages awaiting moderation, if you decide to submit them, you can delete one of them… Thanks.

  21. swash1 says:

Received an email today from web admin regarding another issue, but also indicating that they were working on gettting us an update on the situation possibly tonight. Hinted that legalities were involved in what they can tell us. I guess that even though David and friends are obviously in the right, they can’t afford to upset Brazilian officials.

  22. says:

We also need to get info on the other members of the panel quickly. It is coming up soon. Has anyone called or faxed the lawyer on the panel from New York?

  23. ana says:

Please remember that the media in Brazil are not allowed to publish this. There is an order from the Judge prohibiting the story to be on TV. We must however keep track of Paulo Lins e Silva activities so we can show the world how unethical and cruel this man is. I believe the reason we have not heard back if Sean has met with David is due to some Judge order.
I am always e-mailing some magazines and news papers not connected to GLOBO. I believe GLOBO is somehow connected to Paulo Lins e Silva. He provides them with legal advice. I have seem him on different TV news many times.
I am constantly e-mailing everyone in the list. I believe that is what we should keep doing. Just remember to be polite and professional when writing to judges. I have seem some use of unecessary language on some brazilian blogs.
I think we should create an “Orkut” community for David. A lot of students and young people access this. It is like facebook. This is a good way of spreading the word.

  24. lisacallenwood says:

The Asbury Park Press, specifically Bill Handelman, seems to be doing a good job in keeping this issue in the forefront of people’s minds. There was another article on the front page of the Monmouth edition today.

I’d sent the link to this site out to many folks after the first article, but I get the feeling ‘interest’ is dropping off to people who aren’t local.

Any way of updating this portion of the site with these articles to keep things stirred up??

    Just a thought.

  25. JamesJosephs says:

    That article sickened me.

At this point David should walk into his local police department with his NJ Court Order and whatever other documentation he needs and file criminal kidnapping charges against Joao Paulo Lins e Silva.

Let the corrupt Brazilian media chew on that.

  26. ChrisRennau says:

In Response to Lisacallenwood’s comment keeping awareness up is very important in situations like these. The Lins E Silvia family is probably thinking they can drag things out until public support falls off. The best thing you can do is convince polititians state side that you will not go away. I noticed on the traffic map on this site and on some others that there are more hits comming from the eastern half of the U.S. and hardly any on the west. Maybe some awareness needs to be directed out west.

I would also suggest that people go to their Alumni organizations or any colleges in your area and try to make student organizations aware of the situation. I have contacted a few at Illinois State University. I have seen student organizations draw national attention to issues; when they get behind a cause they can do some amazing things.

  27. tenorplus says:

Just sent another email to all the UAI individuals – hoping for a last-chance of their removing Lins e Silva from the conference and panel! We need to keep this alive and continue to communicate. These individuals (Lins e Silva) and their “buddies” must be brought to justice and once again to help restore the integrity of Brazil. In time, justice will prevail… but sometimes it gets discouraging when we do not see it happen as quickly as needed/wanted! Regardless – we all need to email these individual today, while there is still some time on this front.

  28. tenorplus says:

    That was UIA!!!

  29. LukieD says:

tenorplus is right, email, fax and call these people today if possible. We added three new emails yesterday for Meza Ingar, Secchieri, and Santiago, all co-panelists. Even if these people are out of the office many check email remotely and will be calling in to their offices before the weekend.

Remember most of Europe is 6-7 hours ahead. We have noticed an increase in hits on the site from Continental Europe in recent days, even from Bucharest, so people are reading our messages even if they haven’t responded. Also, it takes a little extra time but sending each individual a personal email addressed to them and referencing their specific role at the conference will make this effort more productive.

  30. swash1 says:

Conferance is over, no news on UIA site. Does anyone know if e Silva spoke from that panel?

  31. tenorplus says:

Yes… any news from this conference?

  32. LukieD says:

It appears that Paulo Lins e Silva’s panel went ahead as scheduled, although we do not have independent confirmation of that. We heard from two supporters who received emails back from UIA members. One email came from the Deputy Director of Human Rights at the UIA, who stated that in his opinion the case was a “private legal problem”. This despite the fact that the Brazilian Central Authority (BCA), which also oversees human rights issues, feels very strongly this case is not just a “private legal matter” and has made a declaration that Sean should be returned to David immediately. The other was a nasty and insulting email from a UIA Executive Committee Member, who happens to be an American attorney, accusing this individual of being part of a “scurrilous effort to extort money” from the Lins e Silva family and spreading “distortions and half-truths” about the case. It even suggested David pay child support to the Lins e Silva family, believe it or not!

We knew it would be an uphill battle with the UIA, but we were surprised at PLS’s success in convincing his colleagues that he is the victim here. We need to refute, in the strongest terms, the false allegations that are being thrown around by this family and make sure people see the true facts. And the UIA should be ashamed of itself for buying this garbage without investigating the facts thoroughly and turning the matter over to its internal Ethics Committee.

Please continue to email the UIA Members listed above encouraging them to investigate the facts of the case and make sure you refute all of the falsehoods being used by the Lins e Silva’s to defend their actions in this case. It’s a good idea to mention to these people the views taken by the BCA (attach the declaration mentioned above which is available on the website), the U.S. government, and the National & International Centers for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC & ICMEC), all of which strongly support the return of Sean to the U.S.

Great idea, LukieD! I have submitted an email to all of the UIA Executive Committee and related persons/members. We need to bombard these people – they should know better! If this is how they deliver justice within their own nation(s) and communities, is it any wonder we have so many problems!! I want to encourage everyone to get the word out… and tell the world about this gross miscarriage of justice. David – hang in there! The “last word” has yet to be stated!!!!!!!!

  34. IPlaw_student says:

Ana, there is already a ORKUT community about David, since sep 18th, I just joined it and I’m inviting my friends to do the same.

the community is called “Give Sean Back”
