Suppose you aren't getting along with your spouse and you think there will be a custody battle and a divorce in the near future. Your spouse is one step ahead of you and skips the divorce part entirely by just leaving with your children out of the country!

This happens more than you'd think. I had a client recently whose wife and children were suddenly in England before he knew it. As it turns out, both England and the United States are signatories to the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction.

Depending on the country to which the fleeing spouse moved, you may be able to have your children returned to the U.S. before there is any judicial determination of custody on the merits. In my client's case, the U.S. State Department has actually offered to hire counsel in England, free of charge to him, in order to assist in petitioning the English Court for the return of his children. I was dumbfounded when I learned this was available.

I will investigate this much closer. I'm certain this will end up being a missed quote. If it is not a mistake, sign me up, make this available to all Left Behind Parents. I understand that a very very small amount of foreign countries who are a party to the "Hague Int. Child Abduction pay for a lawyer.

I spoke to the attorney at the firm that posted the news article. We spoke for 20 minutes and he was not aware of the massive yearly growing numbers of American Children Being Abducted to Foreign Countries and the inaction of the State Dept on behalf of 3,300 plus left behind parents; he was dumbfounded yet again.. The gentleman agreed to show me the methods that got the "State Dept to Act" on behalf of the Left Behind L.B.P.

"Miss Quote"

The taking parent had fled with the children less that one month ago. Thankfully the left behind/chasing parent contacted a reliable attorney immediately, who inturn contacted the State Dept. Secondly Great Britain, via the Hague affords an attorney free of charge to the chasing parent.

Under this situation the State Dept had acted swiftly and promptly helping the left behind/chasing parent get
a legal footing without delay, more importantly putting everyone on notice of the felony abduction.

It is my hope the left behind/chasing parent in this case takes swift and immediate action toward prevention. Time is something a left behind/chasing parent doesn't have and cant get back.
