Looking for Supporter in Florianopolis
« on: July 07, 2011, 01:24:17 PM »
One of the left-behind parents has a conciliation hearing in Florianopolis scheduled on August 16 and 17. He does not speak Portuguese and was told that neither the State Department nor the BCA would provide one. We are looking for someone in Brazil who would be willing to either:

  • attend the hearings for moral support
  • meet with the left-behind parent while he is in Brazil for moral support
  • act as an unofficial translator in the event that the judge does not speak English (a strong possibility)

Please respond if you or someone you know would be able to help.
Thanks

I can't believe they won't even provide a translator.  That's ridiculous.  I'm pretty sure that here in the U.S. we have to provide a translator in both legal and medical situations.

I know in Mexico I could insist they provide a translator, but if I do they'd just use that to cause more delays so I just deal with doing everything in Spanish.

Really?  I work in a hospital and we are always required to provide services to those speaking another language.  We use a "blue phone" to call a translator if we need to do an education or have questions we need to ask and there's no translator in house.  I was also under the impression that the U.S. did provide an attorney to parents from other countries with children abducted here...I must have been mistaken though

Actually, the United States specifically exempted itself from providing legal representation to left-behind parents whose children are taken to the US. Brazil, and other countries, have complained about this vigorously(although it was the US's right to do so) and this is one reason why I believe that we get treated like second class citizens in these cases.

I don't know nobody from Florianopolis, but peharps someone from this website may help, http://www.pailegal.net/, it seems to be a community of fathers that defends their rights to be with and raise their children, supporting other fathers in judicial battles.

Great idea, Andre. I found that they have a forum and I was able to locate a support network in Florianopolis. It is not nearly as active as our forum though. Another problem is that I can read Portuguese much better than I can write. Is there anybody here who is fluent in Portuguese who can post in the forum and try to locate someone? If you find someone, I can then pass on the information to the LBP from our forum.
