UKROPS 10k Richmond VA
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:06:27 AM »
I used to run competitively "in the old days", though I never broke the 4 minute mile I came close at 4.02 on one occasion.

The old days are 25 years and 40 pounds ago (even with the weight I've shed in the last 18 months) - but undeterred, I donned my motivational colors and pounded the streets of Richmond last Saturday in my first road race in almost 10 years.

Note the jet stream effect as I put my final sprint hobble for the finish line and came in 16,235th out of 41,000+ in 1 hour 8 minutes.

The ultimate goal is the Chicago Marathon in October 2011 - I'm running for Donna's Good Things, a charity set up by a friend of mine who very sadly lost her daughter to cancer at age 4:

I'm calling the effort, Hindle's Hobble, because my ankles are shot and I have creeping paralysis of my left leg from old injuries - no records will be broken, but I intend to show there is life in the old dog yet :hihi

My wife has also vowed never to let me out of the house without dressing me again  :biggrin

You should be very PROUD of yourself.  I give you a lot of credit.  It's more than I would attempt.

Karl, I am running a half-marathon on Saturday, been 'training' for it since January.

Gone are the days of my 6:40 mile and an overall pace of 7:00 flat in a 5 mile race.  I ran a 10 miler a few weeks ago and my overall pace was 9:11.  It was an impossibly hard run for me.  My good ol' days were only 5 years ago, but that was before marriage and 3 baby boys.  My legs have slowed down big time.

Amazing to see you are running with injury and bad ankles.  Job well done!!!!

Good luck Christine - it bloody well hurts doesn't it  :wow

I have rested my ankles all week - my problem is I cannot get on the ball of my foot in my right foot so I'm "tabbing", running flat footed, which plays heck with my left leg.  I try for a sub-10 minute mile on a distance run, say 5 miles.  8 years ago I ran the Fleet half-marathon in 1.46; now I'm thinking I'll be lucky if I managed 2.20.

Nevertheless, never quit, never yield and never give in, even if it feels like  deadhorse

That's so nice of you! All the best!
Hope I would be able to join the Marathon too. Keep us updated about it.
