Just thought you'd like to see my latest blog entry at
http://www.lamomsblog.comI, of course, linked to this site. Trying to get the word out to as many people as possible.
Here it is...
Okay here I go. I am climbing onto my virtual soapbox because I am so bleeping mad right now. As a mother, as a parent, as an American citizen and as a human being, I am outraged at the current situation involving American citizen, David Goldman, and his desperate fight to gain custody of his now 9-year-old son, Sean, who was kidnapped by his mother over five years ago, taken from his New Jersey home and brought to live in his mother's native Brazil. The story has been all over the news in the last year or so when it became an even more black and white situation. The boy's mother, Bruna, remarried a powerful and influential attorney and (ironically?) died from complications of subsequent childbirth. With no immediate family member in the country, Sean was still not handed over to his biological father who has been fighting for his son for five long years. Yesterday, a Brazilian court finally ruled that Sean was to be returned to his father and to the United States. His father flew down to South America believing that this was it. But then in another crazy twist, a minor political party filed a motion questioning the legality of the international custody laws and the courts ruled they needed more time to figure things out, possibly even a few months.
More time? This is an outrage. I know that the U.S. government has recently become more actively involved in trying to sort this out but there has been enough waiting and enough trying. Something has to be done. Every day is another day that this American child is being held hostage by a foreign country. Every day is another day that this child is growing and changing without his father. Clearly, diplomacy is not working. It is time for mothers of the world to unite.
We know how powerful mothers can be. We need to call the White House (202 456-1111) in huge numbers and let President Obama know that this is not acceptable. The Brazilian government might have a little change of heart if perhaps the administration called for a boycott of the country which just so happens to rely heavily on travel and tourism. There are things that can be done and we need to get the ball rolling.Father's Day is June 21. David Goldman should be spending that day with his son in the United States of America. If anyone can make that happen, it is us moms. For more information, check out David's website at
